Mulled wine ingredients
- 1 bottle of red wine (750 ml, preferably a fruity variety like Merlot or Zinfandel)
- 1 orange, sliced
- 1 lemon, sliced
- 2-3 cinnamon sticks
- 4-5 whole cloves
- 2-3 star anise
- 60-70 g (3-4 tablespoons) honey or sugar (adjust to taste)
- 60 ml (1/4 cup) brandy (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg (optional)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Spices and Fruit
Slice the orange and lemon.
Gather the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and star anise.
2. Combine Ingredients
In a large pot, combine the wine, sliced orange, sliced lemon, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise.
Add honey or sugar to the pot.
3. Heat the Mixture
Heat the mixture over medium heat until it just reaches a simmer. Do not let it boil, as this will cook off the alcohol and alter the flavor.
Once it reaches a simmer, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer gently for about 15-20 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld together.
4. Add Optional Ingredients
If desired, add the brandy, freshly grated nutmeg, and vanilla extract to the pot. Stir to combine.
5. Taste and Adjust
Taste the mulled wine and adjust the sweetness or spices as needed. If it’s too strong, you can add a little water.
6. Serve
Use a fine-mesh strainer to remove the spices and fruit.
Serve the mulled wine warm in mugs or heatproof glasses.
Garnish with a cinnamon stick or an orange slice if desired.
Tips
For a richer flavor, you can prepare the mulled wine in advance and let it sit for a few hours before reheating and serving.
Experiment with different spices and fruits to find your preferred combination.
Enjoy your cozy and delicious mulled wine!
