Naan

Serves 4-5 people | Prepared in 2.5-3 hours | Difficulty: Moderate

This homemade naan is a warm, soft, and fluffy flatbread with a golden, slightly crispy exterior, perfect for soaking up the rich flavors of your favorite curry or dip.

The aroma of freshly cooked naan, especially when topped with garlic or nigella seeds, fills the air with a mouthwatering scent that makes it impossible to resist.

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 120 ml (1/2 cup) warm water
  • 300-350 g (2 1/2 – 2 3/4 cups) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 60 ml (1/4 cup) plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter or ghee (for brushing)
  • Optional: garlic, cilantro, or nigella seeds

Instructions

1. Activate the yeast

In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm water. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.

2. Make the dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.

Add the yeast mixture, yogurt, and vegetable oil. Mix until a dough forms.

Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Add more flour if necessary.

3. Let the dough rise

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.

4. Shape the naan

Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8-10 equal portions.

Roll each portion into a ball and then flatten it into an oval or tear-drop shape using a rolling pin. The naan should be about 1/4 inch thick.

5. Cook the naan

Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. If using garlic or other toppings, press them into the surface of the dough before cooking.

Place the naan on the hot skillet. Cook for about 1-2 minutes, or until bubbles form on the surface and the bottom is golden brown.

Flip the naan and cook for another 1-2 minutes on the other side.

Brush the hot naan with melted butter or ghee immediately after cooking.

6. Serve

Serve the naan warm with your favorite curry or dip.

Enjoy your homemade naan!
